Eating for Education

It’s hard to believe that we are already thinking about back to school! It seems like our hard working teachers and their precious students JUST got out of school for the summer! While all of those kiddos are out at the pool many of our local teachers are busy prepping for another exciting school year. Here at the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce we like to help out in any way that we can and for the past fourteen years we have partnered with restaurants in our Chamber for Eating for Education.

Eating for Education is always on the second Wednesday in July, August and September. We invite you to dine at one of the 17 participating restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a portion of the day’s sales will go to Eating for Education. Last year we were able to award 68 well-deserving teachers a grant! With the help of the restaurants, business donors and community members we were able to raise about $28,000! Every penny went right back into a Kernersville school.

Teachers from all of the Kernersville schools are eligible to apply for a grant for up to $500 for classroom supplies. The Chamber receives over 100 grant submissions for things like science kits, book sets, special seating, math tools, etc. We have a committee of volunteers that work tirelessly to make sure the volunteers reading the grants and ultimately picking the winners don’t know who the teacher is or what school they are from. They committee also recruits volunteers to read the grants, greet customers at the participating restaurant and attend the Surprise Patrol. The Surprise Patrol is when the staff and volunteers split up and head to the schools to announce the winners of the grants. The teachers have no idea we are coming and it is such a joy to see their reactions! Our committee chair, Kim Herman and co-chair, Pam Link, work hard with the Chamber President/CEO to stretch the donated dollars as far as they can go. They make sure we can meet the needs of as many teachers as possible.

There are so many ways that you can get involved in #KvilleEatForEd! Volunteer to read grants, make a direct donation at the Chamber or eat out on August 8th and September 12th.
