Chick-fil-A Business of Month Article

The Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross location in Kernersville has quickly become a valued part of the local business community since opening its doors on June 30, 2022. Located at 1331 Glenn Center Drive in the growing Union Cross area, the restaurant serves residents throughout Kernersville, eastern Winston‑Salem, and the surrounding Triad region.

From day one, Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross has operated with a strong emphasis on hospitality, quality service, and community engagement—principles that have helped define the Chick‑fil‑A brand nationwide.

Local Leadership and Job Creation

The restaurant is independently owned and operated by David Grix, a longtime Chick‑fil‑A operator and community leader in Kernersville. As a hands-on owner, Grix oversees daily operations while fostering a workplace culture focused on service, teamwork, and personal growth.

At opening, Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross brought approximately 130 full- and part-time jobs to the area, providing valuable employment opportunities for local residents, including students and young professionals. This investment in workforce development continues to contribute to the economic vitality of the Union Cross corridor.  David has impacted many students and young people in the area through his leadership.

Immediate Impact on the Community

The restaurant made a meaningful impact even before serving its first guest. In celebration of its grand opening, Chick‑fil‑A donated $25,000 to Feeding America, supporting hunger-relief efforts in the greater Winston‑Salem region.

Additionally, Chick‑fil‑A honored 100 local heroes with free meals for a year, recognizing individuals who make a difference in the community. This initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to celebrating and supporting those who serve others.

Finally, Chick-fil-A is proud to offer free college tuition to all of their team members through Point University’s Elevate program, an online program that offers more than 100 degree and certificate programs.  The Union Cross and Kernersville Chick-fil-A locations have also awarded 63 Remarkable Futures scholarships worth between $1,000 and $2,500 to their team members who are attending 2 and 4 year colleges and universities over the past two years.

Community Involvement and Giving Back

Community engagement is at the heart of Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross. Like other Chick‑fil‑A restaurants, the location actively seeks ways to support local schools, nonprofits, and civic organizations.

Typical community involvement efforts include:

  • School partnerships and spirit nights to raise funds for local education programs
  • Food donations and hunger relief initiatives, often through programs like Chick‑fil‑A Shared Table®, which redistributes surplus food to those in need
  • Support for nonprofit organizations through sponsorships, events, and in-kind donations
  • Leadership and scholarship programs that invest in students and future community leaders
  • Local Youth Sports Sponsorships like Walkertown Girls Softball and Youth Soccer Associations.

Owner-Operators like David Grix are encouraged to tailor these initiatives to meet the specific needs of their local communities, ensuring that their impact is both meaningful and lasting.

A Commitment to Excellence

Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross is committed to delivering an exceptional guest experience every day. With dine‑in, carry‑out, drive‑thru, and catering options, the restaurant provides convenient ways for guests to enjoy its menu while maintaining a reputation for fast, accurate, and friendly service.

The restaurant operates Monday through Saturday, closing on Sundays—a long-standing tradition that allows employees time for rest and family.

Strengthening the Local Business Community

As part of the greater Kernersville and Union Cross business community, Chick‑fil‑A plays an important role in driving traffic to the area and supporting nearby businesses. Its presence contributes to the continued growth and development of the corridor, making it an attractive destination for both residents and visitors.

Beyond economics, Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross is committed to building relationships. Whether through community events, partnerships, or everyday guest interactions, the team strives to create an environment where people feel welcomed and valued.

Looking Ahead

Since opening in 2022, Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross has established itself as more than just a restaurant—it is a community partner dedicated to serving others. Through job creation, charitable giving, and ongoing engagement with local organizations, the business continues to make a positive impact across the Union Cross area.

As the community grows, Chick‑fil‑A Union Cross remains focused on its mission of providing great food with genuine hospitality while investing in the people and organizations that make Kernersville such a special place to live and work.
