January Business of the Month

Posted By: Amanda Ruark Business of the Month,

Congratulations to our January 2025 Business of the Month - Young's Florist

Young’s Florist, a local staple in Kernersville, is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2025—50 years of business. Established in 1975 by Ken and Betty Young, the floral shop began as a humble operation in their home. Over the decades, it has grown into a cherished community institution, now occupying its current location since 1980.

Owner Tina Compton, who took over the business in 2017 after managing it since 2011, reflects fondly on her roots within the family-run enterprise. “I grew up here,” she shares. “My aunt and uncle taught me my values and how to treat people. It’s those lessons that have carried this business forward.”

Today, Young’s Florist boasts a team of eight dedicated employees who Tina affectionately considers her family. Among them is Derek Wood, the shop’s manager and an award-winning designer recognized as “Designer of the Year” by the North Carolina State Florist Association. Other team members have also achieved accolades, cementing the shop’s reputation for creative excellence.

The shop specializes in various floral services, including weddings, events, and funerals, while also delivering unique and artistic arrangements. Tina emphasizes the importance of customer service and innovation in setting Young’s Florist apart. “We like to create something out of the box,” she explains. “Our award-winning designers thrive on challenges and delivering artistic and meaningful pieces.”

Young’s Florist is more than just a business; it’s deeply embedded in the Kernersville community. The shop frequently donates to local organizations, including churches, nursing homes, and the Rotary Club. Recently, they supported Only God’s Children’s Choir, a local group that spreads joy and faith through music. Tina highlights the importance of community engagement: "Helping others and giving back has always been a core part of what we do.”

Looking ahead, the shop has exciting plans to mark its golden anniversary. The celebrations will kick off with the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce’s visit this January. Additional events, such as a spring open house featuring local vendors and interactive workshops, are also in the works. “We’ve hosted open houses for the past two years, and they’ve been a big success,” Tina notes. “We’re looking forward to continuing that tradition, possibly with a visit from the Easter Bunny this year.”

Despite the challenges faced by small businesses, Tina remains committed to preserving the personal touch and family values that have defined Young’s Florist for five decades. She urges the community to shop locally, emphasizing the importance of supporting small businesses and prioritizing relationships and quality. “We’ve had customers for decades,” Tina says. “People know they can trust us to deliver something beautiful, especially during life’s most significant moments.”
