TRU Taekwondo

The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize TRU Taekwondo as our Business of the Month for February 2026. We would like to celebrate the leadership of Philip Averett and Grand Master Douglas as the company founders and owners. Originally founded in 2012, they opened their first location in Peters Creek in Winston. When they formed the company, they chose TRU as their name. TRU breaks down to “Trust, Respect, Understanding.” This was the foundation for who they are. They believe open, healthy relationships are critical for real growth. After a quick nine months of growth, they doubled the size of Peters Creek until they opened their 2nd location off Country Club Rd in Winston. Next up, came in August of 2016 when TRU Taekwondo opened their 3rd location in Kernersville. The location moved and doubled in size in May of 2018 and has been a staple in the Union Cross area since. As of today, TRU Taekwondo has 22 employees across 5 different locations spanning from Davie County to Kernersville. They currently have plans to open a 6th location and are very excited about continued growth! At the helm of leadership at the Kernersville Campus is Master Ragnar Mclean and head instructor Master Douglas, who is Grand Master Douglas’ son. The Kernersville campus offers Taekwondo programs for all families and ages. They have programs for 4–6-year-olds called Super Kids, programs for elementary ages, and teen/adult offerings. They also offer birthday parties for students and non-students. TRU Taekwondo uses fundamental values (trust, respect, and understanding) in teaching Taekwondo to help students grow. Their mission is simple, to use Taekwondo as a tool to support the growth of each student. To visualize their focus, they develop individuals whose growth creates confident leaders. They believe martial arts are more than just learning techniques. It’s a journey of self-improvement. By using Taekwondo as a vehicle to build confidence, discipline, and resilience, they help kids grow into their best selves. When they do, great martial artists happen naturally. Under their leadership, TRU Taekwondo is active in their community. They have been continuous active members of the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce. Their team has volunteered in all the Kernersville elementary schools and contributes to education committee grants. Their Director of Marketing, Sara-Anne Bell has also served on the education grants committee. Today, TRU Taekwondo has the same values that they did years ago. They are committed to making students, families, and their communities better. They have set the bar high under their leadership. Their goal is to always live up to a high standard every moment, every day. Congratulations to Philip and Grand Master Douglas and the TRU Taekwondo team on being named the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month.
